Nurse Practitioner

Note: Effective January 1, 1998, coverage is available for NP services in all areas and payment is made on an assignment-related basis only.

In order to furnish covered NP services, the NP must meet the following requirements:

  • Registered as a professional nurse who is authorized by the state in which the services are furnished to practice as an NP in accordance with state law, and
  • Certified as a nurse practitioner by a recognized national certifying body that has established standards for NPs

The following organizations are recognized as national certifying bodies:

  • American Academy of Nurse Practitioners
  • American Nurse Credentialing Center
  • Critical Care Certification Corporation
  • National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners & Nurses
  • National Certification Corporation for Obstetrics, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing Specialties
  • Oncology Nurses Certification Corporation

Nurse practitioners applying for a Medicare number on or after January 1, 2003, must additionally possess a master’s degree in nursing.
